I am extremely excited to announce that Josh Chaseling and I have been accepted as Support Team 6 in the 2020 Mystery Box Rally which is taking place in Rockhampton QLD.
The rally will be starting in Rockhampton QLD and end back at Rockhampton in an undisclosed, 3,000Km - 5 day, loop.
For those of you who do not know about the Mystery Box Rally (also known by it's other Rally called 'Shit Box Rally'); Essentially, a bunch of people (in this case 150) raise over $3,500 each by fundraising and jumping into a crappy old car and driving over some of the harshest and most remote locations in Australia. The Rally helps raise funds for the Cancer Council in Australia and have raised over $4.5 million in the last 8 years.
The function of the support teams like what Josh and I are doing is that we follow a designated portion of the 150 contestants in a 4x4 and car trailer, ready to help them if they have any issues. We try and fix anything on the side of the road if we can, otherwise they get pop'd on the trailer and taken back to camp (Good thing Josh is a koalafied mechanic). Each night we make camp and roll our sleeves up and help fix any issues that any of the contestants have with their cars so they can keep driving the next day.
Our contribution to the event is the experience and support we will provide, the support 4x4, tools and fuel to complete the entire journey. Support Teams do not have to raise funds like contestants do, however we have decided to participate in the fundraising efforts as well.
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5 day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
