Andi and Murray are really happy to announce that they have been accepted to take part in the August 2020 Mystery Box Rally starting and finishing in Rockhampton and driving a mystery route over 5 days to raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council.
I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2017. After a series of treatments including radiation, chemotherapy and two operations in mid-2018, I am now fighting fit and all clear. Throughout this ordeal I was supported by his wife Andi and my 4 beautiful daughters Ruby, Willow, Pip and Eadie, as well as family and friends - but it was the care and dedication of the incredible medical practitioners, carers and support staff that we encountered along the journey that was really inspirational.
Men often don't discuss or open up about their medical health. After my experiences I committed to openly discussing men's health whenever the opportunity arose. It was through these encounters that I discovered just how many people are touched by the scourge of cancer.
So Andi and I have been motivated to raise money for the Cancer Council, and what better way than driving our little $200 1982 Daihatsu Charade around the country. A 3 cylinder, 993 cc engine coupled to a lethargic 2 speed automatic transmission directs nearly 40 horsepower to those tiny 13" front wheels. Ground clearance is all of 6" when loaded - no doubt there will be some challenges and fun times along the way.
We hope you can get on board to follow the journey and provide support.
Mystery Box and Shit Box Rallies are one of the largest community led fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia having raised over $20 million in the last 10 years - this particular event is looking to raise $1 million. Part of the prerequisite for the participation is to raise $3,500 minimum per team. Already we have been able to raise more that $21,000 for the Cancer Council driving the Daihatsu Charade in two previous rallies in 2019. We are looking to garner your support once again.
These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The Cancer Council do some awesome work supporting people with cancer, and funding important research.
Fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.
Thanks a heap from Andi and Murray.
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5 day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
